In this event, you not only receive the incomparable experience of making glassblown art, but you also create a piece that invites these adorable little birds to your garden, thus increasing your chances of seeing them. Welcome to Jaja’s bustling hair braiding shop in Harlem where a lively and eclectic group of West African immigrants create masterpieces on the heads of neighborhood women every day. During one sweltering summer day, love will blossom, dreams will flourish, and secrets will be revealed. The uncertainty of these women’s circumstances simmers below the surface of their lives, and when it boils over, this tight-knit community is forced to confront what it means to be an outsider on the edge of the place they call home. This boisterous, heartwarming play by award-winning Ghanaian American playwright Jocelyn Bioh makes its regional premiere following its dazzling Broadway debut!

Commonwealth Sanctuary is housed in the recently renovated, historic former Tower Methodist Church, originally built in 1914. It is no longer a church! Rather, we have converted the purpose of this beautiful old building to bringing you exquisitely curated live entertainment. We have, however, gone to great lengths to preserve the original character of the building while updating for it’s new purpose. We retained all the original stained glass windows and custom-built, curved pews.

We have added a full concession stand with draft beer and wine, as well as many canned drinks, including cocktails and wine. We partner with local Dayton, KY business Kate’s Catering for our prepared food options. We have added full lighting and sound systems, as well as a complete broadcast-quality video system for recording events and live podcasts. We are exclusively partnered with Third Rule Media to produce our recorded content.

Learn from the 2022 Golden Ticket Winner, Leslie Getz, as she shares her phototransfer technique. In this one-time workshop, students will create a self-portrait utilizing Leslie’s techniques paired with mixed media. All students should submit the image of themselves they’d like to use at registration or to classes@cliftonculturalarts.org
