This Renaissance program on period instruments takes us from the 15th to the 17th century exploring the music and roles of the town musicians in the Germanic lands. Hear a varied program of sackbuts, cornetto and recorders and enjoy insights from two of Europe's leading scholars on early brass playing.

Images of Asia have long sparked the European musical imagination. As described by European poets and composers, these images include exotic landscapes and fetishized female figures, stereotypes that remain even as the Asian diaspora has taken root and claimed citizenship all over the world. With three newly-commissioned song cycles by Asian American composers Justine F. Chen, Melissa Dunphy, and Kamala Sankaram, this recital asserts Asian American lived experience from the perspective of those of us who live it. As contrasted with Maurice Ravel’s “Asie,” a prime example of European musical Orientalism, these new songs describe the joys, pains, contradictions, and pride we experience as Asians living in this land we call home.

This is a hand stitching class for experienced beginners, whether you’ve been in my beginning embroidery class or learned your skills elsewhere. We create a beautiful bouquet using different textiles and a variety of stitches that build upon the basics and really explore how to create imagery with embroidery.
The life of an artist on the move can be exhilarating, surprising, enriching, lonely, and scary, to name just a few emotions. Join Ann Toomey and Madeline Slettedahl, two artists who cannot be bound by one genre, for an entertaining and relatable evening of song that captures the emotional wave of life on the road.

Water, a most essential element. Transfixing to watch, enjoyable and challenging to draw and paint. We’ll meet at parks and other outdoor locations, observing and drawing from the water, whether close-up, on the “shore” of a small lake, or viewing the Ohio River from an Eden Park overlook. We’ll draw water’s movement, reflections, colors. And we’ll develop a sense of its place in our compositions, as well as in art history, and the world. Color theory will be included, and you’re also encouraged to work with color intuitively.
Choose and combine your media: from “traditional” drawing media (graphite, charcoal, conté crayon, etc.), to drawing media with color (oil pastels, water-soluble oil pastels, colored pencils, etc.), to ink to watercolor, and more.
