Anton Bruckner channels Bach and sacred church music for inspiration in his mighty Fifth Symphony, which explores themes of struggle, redemption and spiritual transcendence. Often called Bruckner’s most “architectural” work, the symphony culminates in a complex finale that combines elements of sonata, soaring brass chorales and fugue, drawing on themes from all four movements.
