On the morning of September 6, 2018, a gunman entered the Fifth Third Center near Fountain Square in downtown Cincinnati and opened fire. Three people were killed, and Whitney Austin was one of two people injured before police quickly shot and killed the suspect. She was hit 12 times while trapped in a revolving door to the lobby of the Fifth Third tower.
Whitney Austin joins Cincinnati Edition one year after the shooting to discuss how people cope with these tragedies and her work establishing the Whitney Strong Organization to advocate for responsible gun ownership. Also joining the program are Cincinnati VA Medical Center Director of the Trauma and Recovery Center and University of Cincinnati Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience Professor Kathleen Chard, PhD; and UC Health Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing and Communications Officer Kristen Wevers. She is also chair of the Cincinnati Strong Victims Fund Steering Committee, which was created to support the victims of the 2018 shooting.
