They are photos taken on some of the worst days of people's lives. Mugshots can have life far beyond an arrest. They can follow a person indefinitely online, long after jail time is served or charges are dropped. Some argue mugshots undermine the presumption of innocence and disproportionately impact people of color.
Now more and more newsrooms are making the editorial decision not to publish mugshots. Locally, WCPO News will no longer publish mugshots on air and online, with a few exceptions.
