Lawsuit filed over Cincinnati's dependent coverage audit

Provided

The unions representing Cincinnati police officers and firefighters are filing a lawsuit concerning the city's health care dependent audit.

The city wants employees to verify their spouses and children are legitimately eligible for city health benefits.  That includes providing things like marriage licenses, tax returns and birth certificates.

The deadline for that information is Wednesday. Those who fail to comply will loose dependent coverage.

The lawsuit is seeking a temporary restraining order to stop the city from proceeding with the deadline.  A judge will hear arguments in the case Tuesday morning.

Attorney Stephen Lazarus, who represent the unions, said officers and firefighters are willing to provide the information, but they worry what will happen to the legal documents if they are turned over to the city.  He also says, in some cases, getting that information, which could be many years old, is difficult.

Lazarus says the unions are willing to work with the city on the audit but in a less intrusive manner.
