The City of Lebanon, which has already seen thousands of people use its recreational trail south of town, is in the very early stages of extending that path to the north.

City Manager Scott Brunka says Lebanon plans to apply for a state grant to pay the trail extension cost of $650,000.

He and others envision the path utilizing part of the Aylor Cook Trail, connecting to the fairgrounds, then back to Broadway Avenue for a dedicated lane.

Brunka says the trail would connect two schools, an event center and a park.

"It's also connecting a proposed $18 million mixed-use development that's being proposed north of town. So we are very excited to get a trail system that our businesses and residents can utilize."

If Lebanon gets the grant, it would be notified at the end of next year. Brunka would then like to start construction in 2020.

Below is a preliminary plan for the proposed extension.
