Volunteer projects are so much fun and one of the easiest ways you can give back to the Western Wildlife Corridor! If you’ve never attended a volunteer event with us before, we encourage you to join us this Spring. We need help cutting invasive species, installing new trail signs, and repairing trails. No special skills are required. Join us for a fun volunteer event to help restore Whitetail Woods Nature Preserve. Help remove invasive species like honeysuckle, garlic mustard, and winter creeper so that native plants and animals can prosper. We will meet light rain or shine. Please be prepared for the weather and wear clothes that can get dirty and closed-toed shoes. We will provide the tools and equipment but you are welcome to bring your own. Please RSVP to let us know that you are coming.
African Modernism in America features nearly 80 dynamic and vivid works of art created in Africa during the 1950s and ‘60s. Co-organized by the American Federation of Arts and Fisk University Galleries, the exhibition explores the relationships formed between African artists and American patrons, artists, and cultural organizations amid the interlocking histories of civil rights, decolonization, and the Cold War. Many of the paintings, sculptures, and works on paper in the show were drawn from Fisk’s remarkable collection of gifts from the Harmon Foundation. Following World War II, this foundation, along with other institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Fisk University, and other historically Black colleges and universities, supported and exhibited the work of Black artists, including the important modern African artists Ben Enwonwu (Nigeria), Ibrahim El-Salahi (Sudan), and Skunder Boghossian (Ethiopia). Showing African art in the United States rooted it in the present and encouraged American audiences to engage with African artists as contemporaries. The inventive nature of the works in this exhibition challenges the assumptions of the time about African art being isolated to a “primitive past.” Some pieces took inspiration from early Christian art, West African sculpture, and Nigerian literature, while others reflect the influences of American jazz and modern European art.

The artist's soul-stirring narrative unfolds on the canvas with expressions, gestures, and frozen moments that provoke contemplation. The landscape envelops the figures, adding a unique freshness to the narrative, akin to a cinematic experience.
In Muente's words, "The stories I tell speak to the soul. We may not know who these characters are, but we still connect to their problems and desires. We empathize with them. Their world helps us to examine our world.”

Edgar Degas was one of the founding artists of Impressionism. Degas called his work the result of “premeditated instantaneousness.” Ballet dancers were one of his main subjects. Degas said, “People call me the painter of dancing girls. It never occurred to them that my chief interest in dancers lies in rendering movement and painting pretty clothes.”
Join this class and use a combination of drawing, simplified form, and lyrical color to approximate the image Degas was trying to convey. Practice and build on his painting techniques to produce your own version of Degas’ Dancers Before the Ballet in a modern context.
