Adults require seven to eight hours of sleep each night and teens require even more, but few of us actually get that much on a consistent basis. Busy schedules can get in the way, but for many a lack of sleep is due to other problems.
About 40 million people in the United States suffer from chronic long-term sleep disorders each year, while 20 million have occasional problems getting a good night's sleep, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. Examples of sleep disorders include insomnia, sleep apnea, night terrors and narcolepsy.
