How To Keep Kids Safe From Potential Poisons In Your Home

poison control
One poison exposure is reported to U.S. poison control centers every 14.6 seconds.

More than two million poisonings are reported each year to the 55 poison control centers in the United States. More than 90 percent of these poisonings occur in the home. While poisonings affect all age groups, children younger than six years old make up 41 percent of poison exposures annually.

Cosmetics, cleaning products, pesticides and medicines are common causes of poisoning incidents. E-cigarettes, liquid nicotine and opioids have been steadily increasing causes of poisonings in the last few years.

Joining "Cincinnati Edition" to discuss the work of poison control centers and dangers to look for in your home is Cincinnati Drug and Poison Information Center Medical Director and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, Dr. Shan Yin.

The phone number for the Cincinnati Drug and Poison Information Center is 513-636-5111. You can also call the national hotline, 1-800-222-1222, and you will be connected to the center that serves your area.
