State Budget Deadline Looms, New City Tax Abatements & More Top Stories This Week

ce friday

The Ohio House and Senate are nearing the deadline to pass a state budget for the next fiscal year. The General Assembly must present a budget bill to Governor Mike DeWine by June 30. Which means lawmakers have little time left to work out the hundreds of differences between the House and Senate versions of the budget, including a split over funding school services, water quality monitoring and tax cuts.

Ohio lawmakers are also considering sweeping changes to the state's energy policy, and whether to allow Ohioans to carry concealed weapons without requiring training or a permit.

The foundation a Cincinnati city councilman worked for gave hundreds of thousands to churches before the last election.

Major mixed-use and housing development projects are set for downtown and Over-the-Rhine.

And members of the National Newspaper Publishers Association, the trade organization for the more than 200 black-owned newspapers across the country, are in town for its national convention. We'll take a look at the state of the African American press today.

Joining Cincinnati Edition to discuss this week's top stories are Cincinnati Enquirer government reporter Jessie Balmert (@jbalmert); Ohio Public Radio Statehouse News Bureau Chief Karen Kasler (@karenkasler); Cincinnati Business Courier staff reporter and columnist Chris Wetterich (@ChrisCinciBiz); publisher of The Cincinnati Herald, Jan-Michele Lemon Kearney (@CinciHerald); Dr. Benjamin Chavis, Jr. (@drbenchavis), president and CEO of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), which represents more than 200 African American-owned community newspapers in the U.S.; and WVXU City Hall reporter Jay Hanselman (@JayHanselman).
