An Officer-Involved Shooting, Shortage On The Force And Is Cincinnati A Slumlord?

ce friday
Jim Nolan

A 23-year-old woman is recovering after she was shot by a police officer in East Price Hill. The woman was armed with a knife and trying to force her way into an apartment when the officer shot her in the leg. While Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters has declined to prosecute the officer, the incident may highlight a growing need in the Cincinnati Police Department for more officers on patrol.

Chief Eliot Isaac spoke this week about the shortage on the force and the need for more officers to curb an increase in crime. On Thursday, Mayor John Cranley shared that sentiment in council. An officer recruit class is scheduled to begin in December, but to get the force to full capacity, another class would need to be added in the first half of next year.

A report by WCPO finds Cincinnati may be a slumlord, falling far behind in maintenance on city-owned facilities. The city has a $57 million funding gap to maintain "core functionality" of these buildings, which include fire houses, recreation centers, garages and more. And the deficit is projected to grow to $170 million in the next five years. So how did we get in such a financial bind?
