Rob Richardson, Jr., a representative with the Laborers' International Union of North America spoke with Cincinnati Edition about the dangers of construction work after yesterday’s partial building collapse at the corner of Fourth and Race streets in downtown Cincinnati where four people were injured and one person is still unaccounted for.
"Our local just a month ago had two other deaths - not the same type of deaths like pouring concrete - but these things happen more often than people realize," Richardson said. He added, "It is really, really unsafe conditions and this is why these workers obviously deserve our respect, safe conditions and high pay."
Richardson said that the union is providing grief counseling to the families and to workers injured as well as to those who witnessed the collapse of the Cincinnati building under construction. In addition, he said the union has a fund to provide some financial assistance for the inured workers and the family of the worker still missing.
