Debate Over Golf Course At Ancient Earthworks Site

Octagon Earthworks in Newark, in central Ohio.

A set of 2,000-year-old earthworks is at the center of a court battle. It's also at the center of a golf course.

The debate is over the Octagon Earthworks in Newark, located in central Ohio, which are part of the site the Moundbuilders Country Club began leasing in the 1930s.

The Ohio History Connection owns the earthworks and has proposed the site along with other ancient sites in Ohio for nomination to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Now the historical society wants to buy back the lease. And so the Moundbuilders Country Club is being asked to relocate, and the case has landed in the Ohio Supreme Court.

Joining Cincinnati Edition to discuss the Octagon Earthworks and other earthworks sites in our region is University of Cincinnati Department of Anthropology Professor Kenneth Tankersley, PhD. Dr. Tankersley is an enrolled member of the Piqua Shawnee.

Listen to Cincinnati Edition live at noon M-F. Audio for this segment will be uploaded after 4 p.m. ET.
