Coronavirus
As a new strain of coronavirus (COVID-19) swept through the world in 2020, preparedness plans, masking policies and more public policy changed just as quickly. WVXU has covered the pandemic's impact on the Tri-State from the very beginning, when on March 3, 2020, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine barred spectators from attending the Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus over concerns about the virus, even though Ohio had yet to confirm a single case of COVID-19.

Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley told Cincinnati Edition on Wednesday that vital city services are remaining operational during the coronavirus pandemic.

"It's critical that we provide police and fire services to the people of Cincinnati, and fire is predominantly EMT and emergency ambulance delivery, which obviously will be extremely important. We are taking the steps to preserve our workforce throughout this crisis"

Among those steps to keep first responders safe, Cranley says they are rapidly moving away from having two police officers in the same car.

The mayor says we need more personal protective equipment, or PPE. "We have about two month's supply at this time," he says. Cranley asked Senator Sherrod Brown to seek federal assistance to help local factories manufacture the personal protective gear for first responders.

A major question now is will Ohio see a curfew like the ones in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut?

"What we are going to have to get used to is broadening the number of people who will not be needed to travel out and about. We are not ordering that at this time but this crisis is moving quickly."

Cincinnati Edition speaks with Mayor John Cranley about his many plans to limit the spread of coronavirus in the city.
