The state of Ohio and Amtrak have both applied for $500,000 federal grants to study routes that would bring more rail service to Cincinnati. Those are first steps in a long process.

Ohio will likely be using existing freight rail corridors for the expansion, but will still need funds to construct train stations and other facilities.

Earlier this week, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Railroad Administration announced Amtrak would expand four key routes in Ohio.
