Council Member Tamaya Dennard Hosts Gals In Government Day

In 2018, Council Member Tamaya Dennard's office organized the first Girls in Government Day. It was a chance for young women, ages eight to 18, to visit City Hall, meet local elected women and learn about roles in government. Dennard says the event was so successful she had women over the age of 18 asking if they could participate. Now they can.

The first Gals in Government Day was held in the new 1819 Innovation Hub in Avondale. About 80 women, ages 19 and older, signed up to learn about running for political office and getting more involved in their local government and community. Local elected officials and community leaders, including Ohio State Representative Brigid Kelly, Cincinnati Police Sergeant Cassandra Tucker and Cincinnati Public Schools Chief Communications and Engagement Officer Lauren Worley, gave workshops.

Joining Cincinnati Edition to discuss Gals in Government Day 2019 are Cincinnati City Council Member and Council President Pro Tem Tamaya Dennard; and Children's Law Center Staff Attorney Sarah Henry.
