Lee Hay spoke with Diana Porter who is the organizer of a bicentennial celebration of College Hill on Saturday, September 21st from 11am-4pm. The celebration will be a living history event spanning four neighborhoods from Northside to Mt. Healthy, with 9 living history sites focusing on the theme of abolition and the Underground Railroad.
These neighborhoods along Hamilton Avenue were a key route for the northward movement of escaped slaves on their way north hold a very rich history. There will be living history characters in period dress, musical performances, a play being produced by Eve Bolton, vintage dance, children's activities, period food.
One of the highlights of the celebration is that some of the descendants of the fugitive slaves who moved up Hamilton Avenue and settled in Canada will be coming to the event. Additionally some descendants of the Cary family will be flying in from their home in Arizona to do a living history re-enactment of their forebear William Cary, considered the first pioneer of the College Hill community.
It’s the Hamilton Avenue Road to Freedom: An Abolitionist Living History Tour celebration on Saturday, September 21st from 11am to 4pm.
