Settlement reached in UC Taser case

The family of a man who died after being tased by a University of Cincinnati police officer has settled its claims with the university and officer Richard Haas.  After Everette Howard Jr. died in August 2011, UC police took all of their Tasers out of service.

"The university is going to pay $2 million plus provide free tuition for the siblings of Edward Howard Jr.," said attorney Al Gerhardstein, who represented the Howard family.  "The university has continued to withdraw from service all of their Tasers.  Before they put their Tasers back in place, the university will give notice to the Howard family and the public."

Gerhardstein says that last point is important to the Howard family.  They're part of a group that is monitoring the Taser policies of Hamilton County law enforcement agencies and will continue to push for Taser reform.

UC will also install a memorial bench and plaque at the site of Howard's death.

The settlementwas mediated by Saul Green, who also served as the lead monitor for Cincinnati police reforms under the 2002 Collaborative Agreement.
