Roxanne Qualls says if she's elected Cincinnati mayor in the November election, she'll select Council Member Wendell Young to be her Vice Mayor.
Qualls made the announcement Monday during a press conference on the sidewalk outside the Hamilton County Board of Elections
“He is someone who has shown, since he’s been on City Council, tremendous judgment, maturity, and leadership as well as a clear ability to work with the other members of Council to forge coalitions and also to be very collaborative,” Qualls said.
Young said he appreciates her decision. He said this election is an important election for Cincinnati.
“This in my opinion is an election for the very soul of our city,” Young said. “The momentium that we currently have, the progress that we’re making from The Banks to Over-the-Rhine, Washington Park to different neighborhoods, that momentium is extremely important to this city and we need leadership that is visionary.”
Qualls is the city's current vice mayor and is facing John Cranley for the top job in November.
A spokesman for the Cranley campaign said it won't be announcing a pick for vice mayor before the election. Jay Kincaid said in an e-mail any speculation as to who will be Vice Mayor in a Cranley administration is premature since the pool of candidates hasn't been finalized.
