Conditions at former Compost Cincy site getting better

Cincinnati officials report they are making progress cleaning up a now closed commercial food waste composting facility in Winton Hills.

The city is spending $300,000 to remedy the smelly situation at 5656 Este Avenue.

The Office of Environment and Sustainability said in a memo fieldwork was completed last week.  It said nuisance conditions at the site have mostly been eliminated with odors dramatically reduced.

The city said on recent visits, odors were mild and localized to the site with no smells off site.  By spring, compost material can be used both on and off site.

Compost Cincy operated the commercial food waste composting facility from August 2012 to January 2014.  But the operator's failure to comply with state law and city contracts resulted in numerous residents complaining about foul odors.

The city took possession of the site earlier this year.  It has now filed a lawsuit against the former owner and is working to recover costs for the clean-up.
