Ohio Senator Rob Portman says he and his wife Jane are uninjured after the chartered train taking him and other GOP lawmakers to a policy retreat in West Virginia hit a garbage truck south of Charlottesville, Virginia.

The White House says one garbage truck worker was killed and another was seriously injured. Here is Amtrak's statement:

"An Amtrack train came into contact with a vehicle that was on the tracks at 11:20 a.m. in Crozet, Virginia. There are no reported injuries to passengers or crew members. Local law enforcement is investigating the incident and crews are inspecting equipment for damage. The train originated in Washington, D.C. Updates will be provided as new information become available."

The National Transportation Safety Board is also investigating.

Portman and his wife Jane were on board headed to the Greenbrier in West Virginia with dozens of others and he issued this statement:

“Jane and I were on the train this morning traveling to the House and Senate Republican Member retreat. We are both fine. We are keeping those who were injured in our prayers and are grateful for the first responders who quickly arrived on the scene.”

Other lawmakers are tweeting out pictures from the scene.

Representative Roger Marshall, a doctor, is said to be treating people at the scene.
