Is this a good idea? CBS plans a "Big Bang Theory" spin-off for the fall TV season called "Young Sheldon," about Sheldon Cooper at age 9.
"Big Bang" creator Chuck Lorre and producer Steve Molaro are creating the sitcom starring Iain Armitage (HBO's "Big Little Lies") as little Sheldon living in east Texas with his family and "going to high school," CBS says.
The International Movie Database describes young Sheldon as "the idiosyncratic and neurotic genius as a youth growing up in Texas."
Jim Parsons, the Emmy-winning actor who plays Dr. Sheldon Cooper on "Big Bang," will narrate the comedy as adult Sheldon. Parsons will be an executive producer, along with "Big Bang" executive producers Lorre and Molaro.
Zoe Perry ("Private Practice," "The Family") will play Sheldon's mother Mary. She's the daughter of Emmy-winner Laurie Metcalf ("Roseanne"), who plays Sheldon's very religious mother Mary living in Houston on "Big Bang Theory."
The "Sheldon" cast also includes Lance Barber ("It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia"), child actor Raegan Revord ("Modern Family" and Montana Jordan.
On "Big Little Lies," HBO's dark comedy-drama about three mothers with first graders, Armitage plays Shailene Woodley's son Ziggy. Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman also star in the HBO series, which premiered Feb. 19. It was created and written by David E. Kelley ("Boston Legal," "The Practice," "L.A. Law," "Picket Fences," "Ally McBeal" and "Chicago Hope").
Is "Young Sheldon" a good idea? I'm a huge "Big Bang" fan, but I don't think I'll bother watching this one.
Sounds to me like further proof that Hollywood producers have just run out of new ideas in this age of remakes and spin-offs ("MacGyver," "The Exorcist," "The Good Fight," "The Blacklist: Redemption," "Training Day," "Lethal Weapon," "Hawaii Five-0," "24: Legacy," "The Odd Couple," "The Muppets," "Frequency," "Rush Hour," "Limitless," "Heroes: Reborn," "Fuller House," "Prison Break" and "Baywatch").
