The violent 2017 right wing rally in Charlottesville, Va., attracted white supremacists and other extremists and left one person dead. It also sparked a lawsuit against organizers of the event by a group called Integrity First for America, which says it wants to hold those responsible for the violence there accountable.
IFA attorneys argue that the rally was part of a larger, ongoing phenomenon that continued with the deadly Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol by supporters of President Donald Trump and other violent events. That right wing extremism has also played out here in Greater Cincinnati via incidents of anti-Semitism, local leaders say.
Joining Cincinnati Edition to talk about the rise of right-wing extremism and the lawsuit are Integrity First for America Executive Director Amy Spitalnick; and Jewish Federation of Cincinnati Jewish Relations CouncilDirector Jackie Congedo.
As the Jewish Community Relations Council holds its annual meeting it will explore the path from the Charlottesville rally to the Capitol in an upcoming talk "The Crisis of Extremism" on June 29 at 7 p.m. Integrity First for America Executive Director Amy Spitalnick and Lead Counsel in the Charlottesville lawsuit, Sines v. Kessler, Robbie Kaplan will discuss white supremacy and anti-government extremism.
