A feature-length documentary about amateur boxing filmed in Cincinnati is getting recognized. Hardface premiered at the Cindependent Film Festival in 2018 and was awarded Best of the Fest. This year it will serve as a run-up to the festival, which runs Aug. 29-31.
Hardface, which was shot entirely on 16 millimeter film, follows the life of a former fighter turned coach, Richard "Hardface" Mason, as he trains boxers at the Northside Boxing Gym. Mason has been working out at the gym for 30 years, first training under the founder, John Falcone, who started a youth boxing program to help young people escape the streets. The film also profiles lightweight David Carlton and other boxers who call the gym home.
Joining Cincinnati Edition to discuss the film are Hardface Director Mark Hood; Northside Boxing Gym Coach Richard "Hardface" Mason; and Boxer David Carlton.
