Family Said It Was Time For Sister's Killer To Be Released

Ohio Justice and Policy Center
Angelo Robinson was released from prison on August 1, 2019.

A local man is freed after spending 22 years and five months in prison for murder. This isn't a case of wrongful conviction. Angelo Robinson committed the 1997 killing of his friend Veronica Jackson, but his lawyer, most of her family, and even the prosecutor supported his release.

Attorney David Singleton with the Ohio Justice and Policy Center took up Robinson's case for many reasons, including his client's remorse and because he sees Robinson as truly rehabilitated. Robinson maintains that his friend's death was an accident. Singleton founded a project called Beyond Guilt to take a second look at cases where inmates are guilty of the crimes they are convicted of, but where it may be time to take a "second look" at the length of their sentence.

In the case of Angelo Robinson, Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters agreed. They arrived at a mechanism for his release. The judge agreed to vacate Robinson’s murder conviction and accepted a guilty plea to lesser charges of involuntary manslaughter and cocaine possession. He then sentenced Robinson to time served and put him on probation. Robinson is now working and spending time with his family.

Joining Cincinnati Edition to discuss his case are Ohio Justice and Policy Center Executive Director and Attorney at Law David Singleton; Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters; and Angelo Robinson.
