Property Tax Working Group Puts A Cap On Tax Abatments

Vice Mayor Christopher Smitherman, co-chair of the Property Tax Working Group

Carol Gibbs was worried about her neighbors. As the president of the Mt. Auburn Community Development Corporation, she saw how new development in her neighborhood was driving up property taxes, putting residents who lived in the neighborhood for many years in danger of losing their homes.

Gibbs approached Cincinnati Vice Mayor Christopher Smitherman in 2018 and together formed the Property Tax Working Groupwas to study the issue of rising property taxes in areas experiencing significant levels of development.

This month Smitherman brought forth an ordinance to City Council to put a cap on residential property tax abatements. The ordinance passed 7 to 1.

Joining Cincinnati Edition to discuss the Property Tax Working Group are Mt. Auburn Community Development Corporation President and CEO and Property Tax Working Group Co-chair Carol Gibbs; and Mt. Lookout Community CouncilBoard Member Laura Whitman.
