All-Star Game and baseball academy coming to Cincinnati

It's a double header for the Cincinnati Reds... the team will host the 2015 All-Star Game and become the first team in the Midwest with a Major League Baseball Urban Youth Academy.

Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig was in the city Wednesday to make both announcements.

“I am very pleased to award the 2015 All-Star Game to the Reds and the great
fans of Cincinnati. The Midsummer Classic will be a remarkable opportunity to celebrate Cincinnati’s rich baseball tradition, which parallels the history of the national pastime itself," Selig said. "I thank Bob Castellini and the entire Reds organization for sharing our enthusiasm about bringing the All-Star Game to Great American Ball Park for the first time in 2015.”

Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig says he chose Cincinnati to host the All Star game because the city fit all the criteria and then some.

Reds CEO Bob Castellini is excited to host the All-Star Game.

"We thank Commissioner Selig and Major League Baseball for the honor of hosting the 2015 All-Star Game," Castellini said. "Commissioner Selig's staff and our hard-working, very talented organization will team with the City of Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Northern Kentucky and the entire region to produce a jewel event Reds fans will remember for the rest of their lives."

The 2015 All-Star Game will mark the fifth time that the Reds will serve as hosts of the Midsummer Classic, and Great American Ball Park will be the city’s third venue to host the festivities.

All Star game festivities will span 6 days. The league and area tourism officials expect around $100 million in economic impact.

As for the new youth academy, it will open the same year in Roselawn.

“It’s personally special to be a part of bringing this Academy to Cincinnati to make a difference in the lives of the youth of this region,” said MLB Executive Vice President of Baseball Development Frank Robinson. “It will be a great resource for improving baseball and softball skills and also making sure education remains a top priority. Cincinnati has had a lot of great baseball moments over the years, but with this Academy, the most important play on the field is yet to come.”

The Reds MLB Urban Youth Academy, a future state-of-the-art facility that will
provide free, year-round baseball and softball instruction and educational programs to Greater Cincinnati youth from ages 6 to 18.

The Academy is also supported by Procter & Gamble, the City of Cincinnati, the Cincinnati Recreation Commission, and Reds owners and players.
