More snow, less salt

Snow showers Sunday morning sent crews scrambling back out to clear roads in Hamilton County.

Unlike our television counterparts, we at WVXU don't often head out to the salt pile but reporter Tana Weingartner happened to drive past the Hamilton County Engineer's Office and caught a glimpse of the low reserves at the facility. This location has two barns, one for salt and the other for a sand mixture. Each is down to just a ring around the inside edge.

A stream of plows passes through the facility on snowy days. The salt loading process takes just a few minutes and the plows are back out on the streets.

Tana Weingartner earned a bachelor's degree in communication from the University of Cincinnati and a master's degree in mass communication from Miami University. Prior to joining Cincinnati Public Radio, she served as news and public affairs producer with WMUB-FM. Ms. Weingartner has earned numerous awards for her reporting, including several Best Reporter awards from the Associated Press and the Ohio Society of Professional Journalists, and a regional Murrow Award. She enjoys snow skiing, soccer and dogs.
