As you're gathering up all the wrapping paper and bows from Christmas, Hanukah, and any other celebration this holiday season, here's a check list to help answer the question: Can I recycle this?

Note: Service will not occur on Christmas or New Year's Day. Customers with a Thursday trash day will be collected on Friday. Friday customers will be collected on Saturday.

Rumpke expects to see a 25 percent increase in the amount of waste and recycling placed at the curb because of holiday giving. While many holiday items can be recycled, many can damage recycling equipment or contaminate materials used by manufacturers to make new things.

Holiday items that can be recycled:

Packaging:

·        Cardboard boxes

·        Wrapping paper (non-foil)

·        Shoe boxes

·        Paper gift bags

·        Gift boxes

Mail:

·        Newspaper (including inserts)

·        Catalogs

·        Postcards

·        Shipping boxes

·        Greeting cards

·        Envelopes

Food Containers:

·        Aluminum and steel cans

·        Plastic bottles and jugs

·        Glass bottles and jars

·        Paperboard boxes

·        Paper grocery bags

·        Cartons (like broth and egg nog)

Recyclers can stay off Santa’s and Rumpke’s naughty list by reusing, donating or discarding the following items instead of putting them in recycling bins:

·        Unwanted gifts

·        Ribbons and bows

·        Clothing and toys

·        Foil and plastic wrap

·        Electronics

·        Christmas lights

·        Packing peanuts and bubble wrap

·        Plastic shopping bags

·        Décor (wreaths, garland, etc.)

·        Blister or clam shell packaging

·        Batteries
