The Veterans Bridge, as seen from Covington.

A bridge that connects Newport and Covington is closed indefinitely because of corrosion. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says an inspection of the Veteran's Bridge on Fourth Street found deterioration this week.

Chief District Engineer Bob Yeager says it may be possible to reopen the bridge with restrictions, but officials are looking at several options. "We are going with a safety-first approach for the 4th Street bridge," he says.

The pedestrian walkways are still open, and cyclists can use the roadway.  The KTC says the bridge carries nearly 14,000 vehicles a day.  It opened in 1936.

There are detours posted: Going from Newport to Covington, motorists can use York Street to the 11th Street- Girl Scout Bridge to Greenup Street.

Covington drivers can use Scott Street to 12th Street to cross over the Licking River.
