‘Coach’ Won’t Return To TV Lineup

NBC has benched a revival of Craig T. Nelson’s “Coach” weeks before the fall TV season starts.

In May the network announced a mid-season comedy to follow-up the popular 1989-97 ABC sitcom starring Nelson as football coach Hayden Fox.

“Coach” was one of several TV revivals planned for the 2015-16 season. Still in production are reboots of “Heroes,” “The X-Files,” “Full House,” “The Muppets” and “Twin Peaks.”

Original executive producer Barry Kemp was given a 13-show order after shooting a pilot about Fox (Nelson) coming out of retirement to assist his son coaching at an Ivy League school.

Deadline says cancelation was made after creative differences between NBC and the producers before any of the other 12 episodes were filmed. Nelson, a cast member in NBC’s canceled “Parenthood,” will be paid for 13 episodes, Deadline reports.

Bill Fagerbakke was expected to reprise his ABC role in the new Nelson comedy. Shelley Fabares and Jerry Van Dyke also starred in the ABC sitcom.

The TV season starts Monday, Sept. 21.  “The Muppets” premiere Sept. 22 on ABC, and “Heroes Reborn” debuts Sept. 24 on NBC.  “The X-Files” (Fox) and “Fuller House” (Netflix) will premiere next year.
