Starting today, Cincinnati residents and business owners will notice a change in the way the city collects garbage.
For residents it means using trash carts, which were delivered throughout the spring and summer. Nearly 88,000 carts have been dropped off since the program began in April.
Resident must now place all household trash in the city provided trash carts for collection and the lid on the cart must be fully closed. No additional bags or trash cans will be collected.
Cincinnati officials said they’ll continue to work with residents on an individual basis if they missed their cart delivery.
The city is launching semi-automated collection, which means workers won't manually lift and dump trash anymore. Instead, they'll roll the carts to the truck and a mechanical arm will do most of the work.
City officials said residents can save space in their trash carts by recycling.
The city will also have trash amnesty days for residential collections. During these periods residents will be permitted to set out additional trash in sealed plastic trash bags next to their carts. These amnesty weeks will be centered around holidays when households typically generate more trash than normal.
The city is also stopping trash collection from commercial buildings, mixed-use facilities and places with five or more residential units. Those property owners will need to contract with a waste hauler for trash collection.
