Covington Independent Public Schools announced Tuesday that the district is delaying its return for the new school year. Superintendent Alvin Garrison noted multiple problems with facilities as the reason. School will now start on September 3.
John G. Carlisle School downtown suffered a pipe rupture and "significant water damage," Garrison said. The campus of Holmes high and middle schools also suffered water damage recently, he said, as did the alternative program.
"As always, our priority is the health and safety of our staff," Garrison said in the announcement.
"We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but given the condition of several of our school buildings, we selected the best solution for our students, parents, and staff," Garrison said.
The delayed opening will impact the school calendar, which will be revised and approved by the Covington board of education later this month.
