The Mourning the Creation of Racial Categories Project is dedicated to using the power of the arts to help us understand and acknowledge the dynamics of separation, loss and abandonment on which categories such as black, Native American and white were founded.
The Project seeks to tell the story that the racial categories we so routinely check - on everything from school applications to employment forms - were created and institutionalized without regard for biological, family, ancestral, romantic and other ties.
Joining Cincinnati Edition to discuss The Mourning Racial Categories Project are Northern Kentucky University Professor of Sociology Joan Ferrante, PhD.; and one of the NKU students who worked on the project, writer and poet India Hackle.
The Mourning Racial Categories Project will be the topic of the next Six@Six Lecture Series presented by the Scripps Howard Center for Civic Engagement at Northern Kentucky University. The free event will be held at The Carnegie in Covington Thursday, November 29, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Tune in to Cincinnati Edition Nov. 28 at 1 p.m. to hear this segment.
