Cincinnati's Over-the-Rhine has undergone a major transformation in the last 20 years. Vacant buildings opened for new business and the neighborhood was booming with restaurants and bars popping up almost on a weekly basis. Then the pandemic hit.
The city is facing a $91.4 million projected budget deficit that will impact all of Cincinnati's 52 neighborhoods. In Over-the-Rhine, streets that were crowded with shoppers and restaurants spilling out with diners are now quiet. As Jenna Johnson writes for The Washington Post: "Hundreds are unemployed, businesses are completely closed or seeing a fraction of their usual traffic, and there’s widespread fear that the worst is still ahead."
