The Roebling Suspension Bridge is reopening Friday. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says the historic bridge has been closed since April, when pieces of sandstone fell from the north tower onto the road and the east side walkway.
Last month, contractors chipped other loose stone off, and then put up netting as a temporary fix. "Performing emergency work on the 152-year-old historic bridge requires a more extensive process than traditional bridge repairs due to preservation requirements," says District 6 Chief District Engineer Bob Yeager.
The nets are a temporary fix.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has a bigger restoration project in store for the bridge next year. That work is expected to start in the spring and force the closure of the bridge for an undetermined amount of time.
