UC Health will spend $221 million to remodel and update its Clifton facilities. The five-year plan will extend across the 14-acre campus.
The hospital calls this the "largest construction project in the health system's history."
The plan includes renovating and expanding the Medical Center's Emergency Department; constructing a three-story operating room building; and adding two parking garages with capacity for 1,300 spaces. Construction is set to begin in 2020.
Upgrades will also be made to existing facilities and the project includes plans for investment in staff training.
"These projects will significantly improve the way we serve our patients, from how patients access our campus to how our clinicians deliver care very day," says Dr. Evaline Alessandrini, senior vice president and chief medical officer.
President and CEO Dr. Richard Lofgren describes the announcement as a "new day for healthcare in Cincinnati."
The UC Health Board of Directors approved the project in August, according to a release. It says the plan is the result of several years of study and is funded by "operational dollars, financing and philanthropic support."
The project breaks down to $110 million for the new ER, which includes adding three stories; $40 million each for the parking garages and operating room building; and $31 million for infrastructure and other costs. All work will take place within the campus' existing footprint, UC Health says.
The renovations are a continuation of the $30 million in improvements announced in February 2019.
UC Health reports 121,596 emergency department and trauma visits in the last fiscal year. It's the only Level 1 trauma center in Cincinnati, aside from Children's which is a Level 1 pediatric trauma center.
