Free Legal Clinic Helping Residents Apply For Unemployment

VITALIL VODOLAZSKYL, SHUTTERSTOCK.COM

Ohio's unemployment rate has fallen from its pandemic peak of 17.3% in April to 5.6% in October, according to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. But it's not all good news. Workers will now only be eligible for 13 weeks of extended benefits instead of 20 weeks.

In addition, workers who collected benefits under the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance Program will no longer be eligible for seven additional weeks of benefits after Dec. 12.

Applying for unemployment is already a complicated process to navigate and it can take time to get approved. The University of Cincinnati Clermont College's paralegal program is offering a free virtual legal clinic focused on unemployment applications. The clinic on Dec. 1 is open to anyone who needs help with the application process.

Joining Cincinnati Edition to discuss the unemployment legal clinic is UC Clermont College Clinic Director and Paralegal Instructor Dave Myers.

For more information or to RSVP for the Dec. 1 clinic, contact David Myers at myersdj@ucmail.uc.edu or (513) 404-7887.

Listen to Cincinnati Edition live at noon M-F. Audio for this segment will be uploaded after 4 p.m. ET.
