Cincinnati has now designated the former King Records complex in Evanston as a historic landmark. City Council unanimously approved the issue Wednesday.
The company which owns a portion of the King complex wants to demolish its section. There is a lawsuit pending.
Council Member Yvette Simpson is asking city administrators to take a different approach in the future.
“Let’s be proactive about these spaces that we value and let’s declare them historic now before somebody wants to go and pull a demo permit,” Simpson said.
Simpson is asking the city to continue work on reaching a settlement with the current owner to preserve the King Records complex.
Council Member Chris Seelbach is suggesting the city identify buildings that are worthy of historic designations and then let a council committee hold hearings on them.
