Get Your 1970s Pop Culture On Get TV

Jun 27, 2019

What do Glen Campbell, Andy Griffith, Emmylou Harris, Flip Wilson, Dolly Parton, Ricky Nelson, Johnny Cash, Freddie Fender, Bette Midler, Carl Perkins, Dustin Hoffman, Bob Hope and Sonny and Cher have in common?

All appeared in 1970s and early 1980s TV shows which air 10 p.m.-midnight Sundays on Get TV.

On Sunday, June 30, we'll get two half-hour Glen Campbell Music Show episodes from 1982, with guests Willie Nelson, Roger Miller and Jerry Reed, and two half-hour Dolly shows starring Dolly Parton from 1976 with Ronnie Milsap, Mel Tillis and Ralph Emery.

In July, Get TV digs deep into its TV archives for rare gems starring Johnny Cash, Campbell, Parton and Sonny and Cher with guest stars ranging from Emmylou Harris, Loretta Lynn and Carl Perkins to Ricky Nelson, Tammy Wynette, Andy Griffith and game show host/singer Chuck Woolery.

Every Sunday night, I check out the Get TV lineup for great 1970s music and comedy. Last week Get TV's Sunday lineup featured Bette Midler's 1977 special, Ol' Red Hair Is Back with Dustin Hoffman and clown Emmett Kelly, and Ann-Margret's 1977 Rhinestone Cowgirl special with Bob Hope, Perry Como, Minnie Pearl and Chet Atkins.

The week before, I caught a 1976 Johnny Cash and Friends show with Roy Clark, Tanya Tucker, Steve Martin and June Carter Cash, followed by the 1977 Mac Davis: Sounds Like Home with Parton, Tom Jones and disco queen Donna Summer!

I'm not a huge country music fan. But Get TV reruns of the 1969-71 ABC Johnny Cash Show recorded in Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium (when it was still home to the Grand Ole Opry) have a wonderfully eclectic mix of music superstars: Creedence Clearwater Revival; Eric Clapton's Derek & The Dominos; Stevie Wonder; bluegrass legend Bill Monroe; Merle Haggard; Anne Murray; Ricky Nelson; Kris Kristofferson; Roy Orbison; Loretta Lynn; Chet Atkins; the Staple Singers; gospel singer Mahalia Jackson; James Taylor; and Jose Feliciano. The Johnny Cash Show cast included his wife June Carter Cash, Carl Perkins, the Statler Brothers and Cash's group, The Tennessee Three.

In April-May, Get TV aired Sonny and Cher shows with guest stars David Bowie, Paul Anka, Neil Sedaka and opera singer Robert Merrill; actresses Twiggy and Farrah Fawcett; comedian Flip Wilson; rocker Gregg Allman;  and actors Don Knotts, Harvey Korman, Carroll O'Connor, Tony Randall, Glenn Ford, Chuck Connors and Griffith.

You never know what Get TV will pull out of the vault. A couple times I saw a 1970 Smokey Robinson Show with The Temptations, The Supremes and Stevie Wonder. On June 9, I watched a 1974 Flip Wilson… Of Course comedy special with Richard Pryor, Lily Tomlin and Peter Sellers.

On Memorial Day weekend, Get TV aired a couple of  roasts: The Friars Roast of Don Rickles with Johnny Carson, Dick Cavett, Milton Berle, Henny Youngman and newsman Chet Huntley from 1970; and The Friars Roast of Jerry Lewis with Carson, Berle, Rickles, Alan King, Jack Carter and Charlie Callas from 1971.
