Ohio Democrats are calling on President Trump to keep his promises. Ahead of Trump's appearance in Cincinnati Thursday night, state party chair David Pepper says the Brent Spence Bridge remains untouched, despite a 2016 pledge to replace it.
"If he comes up with some infrastructure plan next week, I'm not going to be very impressed," Pepper says. "We're three-plus years in. He had the majority in the Senate and the House for two years and he couldn't do anything about it then."
Pepper says Trump has made and forgotten so many promises that the term "infrastructure week" is a running joke.
Pepper says he is optimistic a transportation bill, including a bridge investment act helmed by senators Sherrod Brown and Rob Portman will get passed.
Trump made the bridge promise during the 2016 campaign and Hamilton County Democratic Party Chair Gwen McFarlin says nothing has happened since. She says the president's opponents and supporters should keep that in mind.
"No matter what we may think here in southwest Ohio about this president's attacks on women, attacks on African American members of congress, attacks on Muslim Americans, on immigrant families, you cannot deny that he continues to break his promises," McFarlin says.
She says when members of the local Republican congressional delegation defend Trump, they're defending his record of broken promises and divisive rhetoric.
Democrats held a news conference at Smale Riverfront Park Thursday morning.
