Law Enforcement Agencies Adopting Statewide Standards

Ohio Collaborative Community-Police Advisory Board

More than 500 law enforcement agencies in Ohio are adopting statewide standards for use of force - including deadly force - hiring practices, body cameras, and other issues.

Speaking at a roundtable in Cincinnati Monday, Gov. John Kasich said he thinks the rest will come around "because that's a human life that's at risk. Whether it's law enforcement or it's the community. So, for those that are not on board, they'll get there."

The task force that created the standards was put together following the shooting deaths of John Crawford and Tamir Rice by police.

State Rep. Alicia Reece says it's similar to the collaborative agreement brokered in Cincinnati following rioting in 2001.

"This initiative establishes one set of rules for the entire state, creating equal justice for all citizens," she says.

The Rev. Damon Lynch III was part of Monday's roundtable.

"Community-police relations is right now at the top of many people's agenda," he says. "It's also undergirded by some of the other major issues we still have to face as a community. This was extremely important and it's powerful."

Lynch says he expects to see great things.
