A 2016 portrait of Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg by artist Constance P. Beaty is displayed in the Great Hall following a private ceremony for her at the Supreme Court in Washington, Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2020. Ginsburg, 87, died of cancer Sept. 18.

The death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has added another level to the battle for the White House.

Though Republicans denied Democratic President Barack Obama a final justice on the nation's high court, citing the 2016 election nearly nine months before voters hit the polls, many of those same politicians are fighting swiftly to confirm President Donald Trump's yet-to-be-named replacement for Ginsburg, just weeks before Election Day.

Now, with the country still grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic, which has claimed the lives of more than 200,000 Americans, along with an uncertain economy and continued calls for racial justice, the entire political discourse appears ready to shift to possible upcoming confirmation hearings.
