Sparky Anderson got fired in Cincinnati – again – as a sportscaster for WKRP In Cincinnati.
Hall of Fame catcher Johnny Bench switched uniforms in winter of 1971 – after winning the 1970 National League Most Valuable Player award – to play a military guard on TV's Mission: Impossible.
With the 2020 baseball season on hold – and everyone stuck at home watching TV – it's a good time for a lineup of big league players in prime-time roles on Mister Ed, Cheers, Bewitched, Everybody Loves Raymond and other TV hits.
Here's my roster:
SANDY KOUFAX on MISTER ED:
Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax, baseball's greatest left-handed pitcher, https://youtu.be/tuqezDenGfY","_id":"0000017a-3b55-d913-abfe-bf55230a0003","_type":"035d81d3-5be2-3ed2-bc8a-6da208e0d9e2"}">https://youtu.be/tuqezDenGfY ","_id":"0000017a-3b55-d913-abfe-bf55230a0002","_type":"035d81d3-5be2-3ed2-bc8a-6da208e0d9e2"}">https://youtu.be/tuqezDenGfY ","_id":"0000017a-3b55-d913-abfe-bf55230a0003","_type":"035d81d3-5be2-3ed2-bc8a-6da208e0d9e2"}">https://youtu.be/tuqezDenGfY " target="_blank">was no match for TV's talking horse . Koufax also appeared in 77 Sunset Strip, Colt .45 and Dennis the Menace in the 1960s, but his TV career highlight was a 1963 episode in which Mister Ed, through his owner (Alan Young), gave baseball tips to Leo Durocher, John Roseboro, Willie Davis and Koufax. Then he stepped to the plate and homered off Koufax.

FRANK ROBINSON on THE COSBY SHOW
It's not surprising that Hall of Famer Frank Robinson, who started his career with the Reds, would appear on Bill Cosby's hit sitcom in 1991 as a former Negro League player with 1950s Dodgers-Reds reliever Joe Black. But in Robinson's other sitcom appearance, he was Hangin' With Mr. Cooper on Mark Curry's ABC sitcom with slugger Albert Belle in 1995.

As a kid, I remember seeing the Braves great lefthander as a German soldier in 1963 on Combat!, ABC's World War II drama. I met Spahn when he came to Cincinnati for the 1988 All-Star Game, and he told me how filming ran long and he arrived at Dodger Stadium still wearing his army uniform.
