WVXU Changing Weekend Lineup

Courtesy WHYY-FM
"Weekend Fresh Air" hosted by Terry Gross joins the weekend schedule at 7 p.m. Sunday Sept. 7.

With the end of WVXU's Around Cincinnati Sunday night local arts show, and Chris Thile's national Live From Here Saturday program, weekends will sound different.

Lee Hay's Around Cincinnati ends at 7 p.m. this Sunday, after 15 years. Live From Here, which replaced Garrison Keillor's a Prairie Home Companion, ends Labor Day weekend.

Latino USA and Bullseye will fill Thile's 6-8 p.m. time slot on Saturday starting Sept. 12.

On the Media will air at 11 a.m. Sunday, with Francis Lam's Splendid Table moving to 1 p.m. Sunday on Sept. 13. Freakonomics will be heard at Sunday noon. (Thile's show repeated noon- 2 p.m. Sundays.)

Terry Gross' Fresh Air Weekend replaces Around Cincinnati at 7 p.m. Sunday on Sept. 6.

The late Oscar Treadwell's "Jazz With OT" has been added to the WGUC-FM HD 2 jazz channel.

One more change: Repeats of the late Oscar Treadwell's Jazz With OT have been added to the WGUC 90.9 HD 2 jazz channel at 10 p.m. Friday.  Jazz With OT continues to air at 10 p.m.-midnight on WVXU.

The rest is from the Cincinnati Public Radio release:

6 p.m. Saturday: Latino USA – Maria Hinojosa explores and gives voice to the diversity of the American experience with a mix of news and cultural stories that will complement and share affinity with All Things Considered. Maria brings a wealth of experience, award-winning work and insight to the program and is telling stories that are currently missing from other programs. Being able to add Latino USA to the schedule right after All Things Considered gives the program a good lead in to support these new voices and stories.

7 p.m. Saturday: Bullseye - As Saturday evening transitions and listeners are moving into relaxation mode, Bulleye's Jesse Thorn provides fascinating long form interviews with the creative people that entertain and amaze us. The program also checks out what's making the critics sit up and take notice and goes for the funny bone with original comedy.

11 a.m. Sunday:  On the Media - When listeners are asked what program they would like to hear on WVXU, On the Media is the most frequent answer. Covering complex, sticky issues with frankness and transparency, hosts Brooke Gladstone and Bob Garfield have been on the leading edge of the conversations taking place in the media across our country.

Noon Sunday: Freakonomics – This program is also mentioned as one our listeners would most like to hear. Stephen Dubner uncovers the hidden side of everything from the economics of sleep to how to become great at just about anything. He speaks with Nobel laureates and provocateurs, intellectuals and entrepreneurs to discover those things you always thought you knew (but didn’t) and things you never thought you wanted to know (but do).

1 p.m.  Sunday: The Splendid Table moves to early afternoon - when listeners have the time to take a break and feed their soul with a journey through the world of food and lifestyle.

7 p.m. Sunday: Fresh Air Weekend - Throughout the events of 2020, listeners have responded to On Being’s deep conversations in the search for meaning and humanity. Looking for a program that would provide the right bridge that carries listeners between these conversations and the raw, emotional stories of The Moth Radio Hour required the best that public radio has to offer.

Heralded as one of the best interviewers in the media, Terry Gross connects with her guests and asks the questions that always enlighten. Listening to her best interviews from the week is the perfect way to spend Sunday night before a busy week ahead.

Fresh Air Weekend will begin on Sunday, September 6.  WVXU will broadcast its final Live from Here program on that same weekend September 6 and 7.  All the other programs will debut the weekend of September 12 and 13.

Last week, we were also able to add Jazz with OT to WGUC's 90.9 HD2 jazz channel. Local jazz listeners will now hear OT on Friday evenings at 10 p.m.
