A good haul for Beau on his first day. The K-9 sniffed out drugs and drug paraphernalia.

Norwood's new police dog is earning his keep. In less than two weeks on the job, he's sniffed out piles of drugs and tracked down felons.

The swearing-in took place June 25 at Norwood City Hall.

Sir Beauregard (Beau for short) is officially a member of the Norwood Police Department after a swearing-in ceremony at City Hall.

It didn't take long for him to make an impact. K-9 Officer Phillip Harvey says on the dog's first day, just four hours into the shift, he sniffed out 14 syringes, three crack pipes, a bag of heroin and fentanyl and cocaine.

A few days later, during a 12-hour shift, he was called on five different times.

"He's going to be an absolute asset to this community and if you are a law-abiding citizen you are going to love this dog," says Harvey.

The officer continues to work with Beau after both had 12 weeks of training at the new Ohio State Patrol K-9 Academy.

Harvey explains how the Belgian Malinois is trained to think. "Everything they do out here working is a game for them. It's fun. They love being at work because they get their toy. If they find drugs in a car they get a toy. If they locate a bad guy after tracking them who commited a felony, they get praised."
