Organizer and artist Phillip Agnew is the keynote speaker for the Bootcamp for Activism.

The Coretta Scott King Center for Cultural and Intellectual Freedom in Yellow Springs is hosting a three-day "Bootcamp for Activism" as part of the center's mission advancing the work of social justice.

"We want to be known - the Coretta Scott King Center - as a leader in providing this type of training," says Executive Director Mila Cooper.

Workshops, programs and lectureswill touch on topics such as knowing your rights, self care, digital organizing, art in activism and financial matters.

Activist, organizer and artist Phillip Agnew is the keynote speaker. He co-founded Dream Defenders in 2012 following the death of Trayvon Martin, and rose to the national stage by helping organize Florida college students. He now travels the country doing organizing and training work.

You can see his TED Talk here.

"This boot camp isn't issue specific," Cooper points out. "It's pretty general in terms of providing an opportunity for participants to hone their skills and learn about a variety of topics that could impact their activism."

Registration is open to everyone. The center is part of Antioch College and students from the school and other colleges across Ohio and several other states are signed up to attend, but Cooper points out other participants range from millennials to baby boomers, with people coming from various places in their activism, not just beginners.

"It's not just theory and learning," Cooper adds. "We have someone who is very interested in and committed to action, not just learning, and he's given us some money (up to $10,000) that we can fund several projects depending on what the participants come up with."
