The People And Culture Of Appalachia Here In Greater Cincinnati
Appalachia is a cultural region in the eastern United States; its varied inhabitants settled in the hills and mountains of southwest New York to northern Alabama, Mississippi and Georgia. In Cincinnati, there is a strong urban Appalachian population ? more than half a million people ? along with deeply-rooted traditions.
Along with that also comes some unique struggles such as preservation of the culture and job availability.
Joining us to talk about Appalachia, its rich culture and community, and its challenges are Founding Director of the Urban Appalachian Community Coalition in Cincinnati and Head of the Appalachian Area Office of Catholic Social Services of Southwestern Ohio, Mike Maloney; Leader of the Urban Appalachian Community Coalition Arts Community, Poet Laureate of Cincinnati and author of books related to urban Appalachia, Pauletta Hansel; President of the Appalachian Studies Association and Conference Chair for the ASA?'s 2018 conference, Debbie Zorn; and composer Nate May who has a new composition titled State: A Testimony to Urban Appalachia.
