Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was first elected to represent the Commonwealth of Kentucky in 1984. Victorious in six elections for the seat, one of the nation's most powerful politicians wants to win his seventh six-year term.
But there are three Democrats with healthy campaigns looking for the chance to stop him.
Amy McGrath, a Northern Kentucky native and former Marine, is widely considered to be a favorite on the Democratic side, largely because of the war chest she was able to raise after announcing her candidacy.
Another retired Marine-turned-farmer, Mike Broihier, landed the support of former presidential candidate Andrew Yang, whose eager social media followers jumped to Broihier's aid.
And State Rep. Charles Booker, who represents Louisville's West End, a predominantly African American part of town, is gaining traction with his message that he preaches "from the hood to the holler" in an effort to unite the mountains and the cities through their similarities.
All three candidates join Cincinnati Edition to talk about why they are best-suited to give McConnell a run in November.
